PLAN AND CONSTRUCTION 1920 - 1969
• Marcello Piacentini

Through the 1937 pitch, the Ministry of Public Works, with the personal involvement of the Head of State, tried to give Forlì a definitive seat for the entire judicial organization.

Two very old blocks were completely knocked down and via Bagnola was completely canceled to initate the monumentality imposed by Piacentini with the Courthouse of Milan.

Due to the poor results in the world war the works were suspended, leaving a huge building almost entirely deprived of any finish. The building has been used as courthouse only since 1968.

The two-colored pattern resulting from the execution of the porphyry base and the Lombardy tile covering were supposed to establish a relationship with the severe old terra-cotta of the bell tower and the apse of the S. Mercuriale monumental complex, but was replaced by plain plaster and travertine base because of the difficulties caused by the war. The protest of the competent bodies did not change the decision to use poor materials in the interior decoration as well.

The designer himself, Francesco Leoni, noted a general degradation of the austerity and monumentality of the entire building.
