TYPE: • Education and training • University LEGAL STATUS: • Private property PLAN 1972 - 1975• Giancarlo De Carlo |
The plan proposes the restructuring of the University in accordance with a multipolar model. The articulation and distribution of the various university premises on the territory follows a hierarchical-functional scheme and keeps the town around it in mind.
The poles, interconnected through a network of passageways and paths, are divided into central, peripheral and central poles.
The central poles are the buildings designed for housing the teaching and scientific facilities, and the places where the most intense interaction amongst the several disciplines occurs.
There are two central poles, located in two different areas: one in the historic center, spread out on several premises, including the old premises and other buildings (humanistic faculties), and one in the west area of the town (in the Cravino area), consisting of one structure (scientific faculties).
The historical center pole includes five premises: the University headquarters, which house the Rector’s office and the faculties of Law, Arts and Philosophy; the former S. Felice orphanage, which now houses the Faculty of Economic Science; the former Calchi barracks, that have been transformed into the Faculty of Political Science; the Botta building, which houses the administrative offices and the secretarial office; and finally the Centro Studio Genio Militare, which now is the Faculty of Educational Science.
The Cravino central pole houses the Faculties of Engineering, Mathematics, Biological Science, and Pharmacy. It has been developed according to a modular grid based on the staircase units. The buildings of this pole are interesting because of their cross-section, which articulates the space in a very functional way, and the materials used are: steel supporting structure, porcelain steel facing panels, white painted open-face concrete block internal partitions, metal staircases with gridiron steps.
The peripheral poles are the places where studies are collected and materials for the teaching activities are checked. They are spread out in the peripheral districts and located in strategical areas of town that need more facilities and systems; this has been done in order to integrate the University and the developing town.
Finally, the middle poles holds supporting equipment and systems for the university, facilities and sites “between” the town and the university. They are located in the town center near the recreational structures and spaces. One of them is the entire Ponzo Vanzina area, destined for the university canteen and facilities for various types of cultural activities and the guest quarters located in the Faculty of Genetics.
