The Teatro Regio in Turin was designed by the architect Carlo Mollino and built between 1965 and 1973. Later, in 1996, new work was carried out by the architects Aimaro Isola and Roberto Gabetti. The theatre’s recent history began on the morning of 9 February 1936 when it was seriously damaged by a fire. The following year, a competition was held to design a new theatre with the most modern facilities.
The winners of the competition were Aldo Morbelli and Robaldo Morozzo della Rocca but the outbreak of war postponed the building work and the project was left substantially at the planning stage. Finally in 1957, the city of Turin decided to complete the work and the architect, Carlo Mollino, with Marziano Bernardi, Vittorio Viale, Carlo Graffi and engineers, Adolfo and Marcello Zavelani Rossi, drafted the final project for rebuilding of the Turin theatre: it was an “open” solution that immediately revealed its foyer of suspended ramps and footways which could were not visible from piazza Castello. Mollino completed the draft project in four months and the working project three months after that. In 1996 the theatre hall underwent acoustic renovation by the architects Roberto Gabetti and Aimaro Isola who introduced a number of new architectural features into the original profile especially in the hall and the proscenium stage which was modified with a grid structure. A fine gate created in the same period by the sculptor Umberto Mastroianni closed off the small covered piazza opposite the theatre, a decision that mortified the Mollino project and denied the city of a public area.
The elevation of piazza Castello has been completely rebuilt and has become the façade of the theatre whereas the new "modern" building has been detached from the 18th century Alfieri building and connected to it by two walkways. When entering from piazzetta Mollino, from the portico looking onto piazza Castello, you can see how the sinuousness of the theatre walls contrasts with the linearity of the Juvarra style State Archives whereas if you walk around the edge of the theatre you are offered several different views.
The building has a number of entrances in the covered street that lead straight into the foyer which can be seen from outside. From here, a system of bridges and walkways takes the public from the foyer to the various access levels in the hall. The projecting flights of stairs encircle the central core of lifts connected by the bridges. The hall has a single auditorium, is elliptical in shape, and descends towards the stage which is inserted in it. The elliptical-shaped cavea of the auditorium contrasts with the elliptical shell of the covering surrounded by “suspended” tiers. The perimeter is horse shoe-shaped whereas the roof consists of a dome from which the lighting “cloud” hangs which was designed by Mollino who also designed all the original furnishings and is formed of thin, needle-shaped rods. Soft, bright coloured fabrics are a distinguishing feature of the whole building. In addition to the hall for lyrical drama and operas which seats 2374 there is also an underground hall which seats 700 and one which seats 400.
Modern architecture in the surrounding areas: Located right in the city centre, the Regio is situated close to other buildings by Mollino (Auditorium), and the architects Passanti (Palazzo dei lavori pubblici - municipal office of Public Works), Gabetti and Isola (enlargement of the Museum of Antiquity) and Umberto Cuzzi (RAI production centre in via Verdi)
Public opening hours: In addition to when performances are held, visits to the theatre can also be arranged by prior booking
