The traditional district to be changed has been occupied by Fiera di Milano since 1923 and covers an area of 440,000 square meters.

In the new district, whose project is one of the most important architectural feats in Europe, the area occupied by the Traditional District will be reduced to 185,000 square meters, so 255,000 square meters will be cleared for revitalization by CityLife that has won the international pitch.

The new Portello halls plus some adjacent areas will continue to their exhibition activities, while the “heavy” exhibitions will be moved to the new premises of Rho-Pero.

The new district surrounds a large urban park (the third largest in town, after the Parco Sempione and the Public Gardens) with parking areas, cycling tracks and playgrounds for children, which stretches to the surrounding road limits of the area.

The district will include many cultural, entertainment and sports activities: from the Palazzo delle Scintille (a cultural center for children), to the new Contemporary Art Museum and the traditional Velodromo Vigorelli.

The operational activities will be gathered in the three important towers designed by Arata Isozaki, Daniel Libeskind and Zaha Hadid: the three structures, the image of the international architectural avant-garde, redesign the milanese skyline and are destined to become the new symbol of the city in the world.

Five residential areas, all of them facing the park, will accommodate over 4000 new residents: the various types of house of different and adjustable size will stand next to green areas and plenty of leisure time facilities: swimming pools, movie theaters, restaurants, etc..

Finally, there are areas reserved for business activities: one of the main buildings, the Design Center, will house commercial activities and exhibitions of the most prestigious Italian companies.

There will also be a service center for citizens, businesses and organizations.

According to the project, the new district, through an underground road and parking lot system, will be one of the largest pedestrian areas in Europe.
