The project was carried out between 1933 and 1934 by Carlo Mollino and his father Eugenio for the competition announced by the Fascio dei Combattenti. After winning the competition, the building was erected between 1934 and 1937 on the municipal area of the former Monastero di Santa Caterina (13th century), and since then has changed its functions several times: recruiting center offices until 1929, now it houses the Tax Office.
The building is characterized by its strong overall look (a distinctive feature of engineer Eugenio Mollino’s work). However, it also shows some of the characters typical of Mollino’s approach: breakdown of volumes, facing of one of the outside fronts with multicolor ceramic tiles, and narrow openings, reflecting extreme examples of ribbon windows.
