PLAN AND CONSTRUCTION 1989 - 1991
• Aldo Rossi

The Carlo Cattaneo Free University Institute is built on the site of the former Cantoni cotton mill. The project is part of a wider regeneration programme for the entire disused area and of its link with the Olona valley system.
The naming of the university after Carlo Cattaneo is a tribute to the great economist who for the first time in history adds to the three fundamental elements of classic economic science (raw material, capital and labour) the intelligence and will of men, thus giving the role of the entrepreneur primary importance within the economic system.

"The architectural project therefore aims to add value to this part of town, integrating it with the remainder of the urban elements, thinking specifically about the public and civic role the university plays. Two particular problems are added to this general theme: the first is the integration of the project area (so far alienated from the rest) with the existing urban fabric; the second is the refurbishment of the industrial buildings that are maintained and at the same time redefined for new functions.

The project is therefore generally a restoration and preservation project, although in actual fact it builds a new architecture with alterations made in the general design.
For this reason, the grounds - seen as a formative element of the urban fabric - should be considered one of the main themes of the project.
Moreover, making the grounds of Villa Jucker - so decorous and beautiful - public is very simple to do; however, they should be connected to the more extensive system of the Olona valley, for which the project envisages a more thorough restructuring.
The connection of the two grounds is to be achieved using an underpass (across C.so Matteotti) and a portico built along the ramp connecting the town centre with the Olona valley.
The problem of reinterpreting the buildings is instead strictly a question of architecture. In this case, the project is necessary to qualify and represent, via architecture, the new features of the university and of the communal spaces respect and add value to the existing structure only where necessary".
