PLAN AND CONSTRUCTION 1946 - 1947
• Carlo Mollino

The idea of building a bar, solarium and hotel at Lake Nero dates back to 1944, when automobile entrepreneur, Piero Dusio, chairman of the Sledge-lift Company of Ulzio (called Clotés Company from 1945 on), planned the building expansion of the Sauze d’Oulx and Clotés zone. Carlo Mollino began the project in 1946, developing different preliminary sketches in rapid sequence. The building, opened in 1947, differed from construction and published drawings, corrected by Mollino, especially in the interiors.
Contemporary critics were very flattering about what they considered the “non-folkloristic transfiguration of classic construction of the mountain chalet. In 2001, after nearly thirty years of degradation and general indifference, the chalet underwent lengthy and complex restoration work and presently has space for a cafeteria and museum of period skis, temporary exhibitions.

The project envisions an engine room for the sledge-lift on the ground floor, a bar and restaurant facing the mountain, and solarium terrace facing south. The central staircase in the restaurant should have led to dormitories obtained from the volume of the roof with room for about fifty guests. However, the space under the roof shall never be used as a dormitory. It is a construction only apparently in “blockbau”: the first storey is entirely crossed by a porticoed structure with overhanging beams, which is completed on the covering storey by a series of concrete roof trusses with variable geometry, whose centrings adapt to the complex geometry of the pitched roof.
Behind the appearance of a traditional blockbau in solid wood is hidden a modern and oversized skeleton structure, which reduces the external walls to simple reinforcement, lacking static function. An aerial volume in wood beaded vertically, with the roof in counterslope, rests on just two solid pillars which frame an ample glazed wall and the sinuous terrace with mushroom-like pillars in reinforced concrete. Run down by neglect and lack of upkeep, after being abandoned in 1989, it was returned to its original conditions by Giovanni Brino and Giorgio Raineri. In the early nineties they drew up a preliminary philological restoration project which was completed only ten years later, while the interior was only finished in 2005.
