On the basis of the material collected, it was possible to identify the most frequent subjects and most significant types of architecture, defining a series of themes which tourists may use as a basis for planning their own individual itinerary through the data bank. In defining the “standard’ itineraries, the intention was to find themes that were both interesting and different from the usual stylistic, chronological and typological classifications (available in any case on the site), suggesting – in a slightly provocative manner - a new way at looking at architecture. The five itinerary themes suggested in this guide (Soul, Body, Space, Time, Metamorphosis) therefore, constitute the coordinates of a map encompassing the various types of architecture. On the one hand they intend to define itineraries that are both geographically and chronologically balanced while, on the other, they cross-refer to other, more comprehensive groups representing specific types of buildings, the personality of their designers, their historical and cultural background and the geographical areas they are set in. The value of the five key-words lies therefore in their ability to stimulate and captivate the tourist's interest, while at the same time responding to the project's three basic requirements: the scientific criterion, represented by grouping the constructions together by type and subtype; the possibility of creating highly diversified itineraries; the emotive value of guide-terms that are more narrative in nature than technical. |
